‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is doing exactly what it was expected to: create havoc at the box office. The film has entered its first week and seems to be growing from strength to strength. After six days, this Prabhas-starrer has grossed around Rs 615 crore worldwide, breaking the lifetime record of several movies.

Directed by Nag Ashwin, it combines the elements of science-fiction with Indian mythology and something about that has clicked with the audience. As per a report published in the trade website sacnilk, ‘Kalki’ is expected to cross the benchmark of Rs 650 crore gross worldwide on its seventh day. It has already surpassed the overall worldwide business of Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’ and Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Leo’. Both the Tamil films made staggering numbers last year and finished their run at Rs 604.5 crore and Rs 605.9 crore, respectively.

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is also almost ahead of Prabhas’s previous screen outing, ‘Salaar-Part I: Ceasefire’. The Prashanth Neel directorial registered a worldwide gross of Rs 617.75 crore after its full run at the box office and the new Prabhas film will have crossed this figure today. It is now aiming to move past ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Gadar 2’, which collected Rs 650 crore and Rs 686 crore, respectively, during their overall run.

The ultimate goal of the film is to cross the mammoth benchmark of Rs 1000 crore at the worldwide gross box office. Only six Indian films have done this kind of unthinkable business so far. This includes the unbeatable ‘Dangal’ which collected Rs 2070.3 crore worldwide, followed by ‘Baahubali 2’ which grossed Rs 1788.06 crore, ‘RRR’ at Rs 1230 crore and ‘KGF 2’ with Rs 1215 crore in its kitty.

Interestingly, the Hindi market is performing better than expectations for ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ as compared to the Telugu market where the film is showing a drastic drop in some areas. It will be difficult for the film to touch the Rs 1000 crore mark if the Telugu audience fails to support it in the coming days, especially in the second weekend.
